Garden Description

A canopy of native Douglas firs creates an ideal environment for this three-acre natural woodland garden featuring superior forms of species and hybrid rhododendrons.

Complementing the rhododendron collection are trees, shrubs, wildflowers and bulbs. Each pathway reveals its own visual treat—a moss covered log with plants tucked in the bark crevices, plants thriving on tree stumps, drifts of wild flowers. Masses of Cyclamen, Narcissus, Erythronium and Trillium flourish here.

The Smith Garden has charmed and delighted visitors from around the world.

It has been featured on the cover of Horticulture Magazine, on television’s Garden Time and PBS Victory Garden, and is included in the book The American Man's Garden by Rosemary Verey.

Custom Guided Tours Can Be Arranged

Plants propagated from the garden are offered for sale.  From the Parking Area to the Gate House to the Plant Sale Area, paths are fairly flat and there is a bench for sitting.  (People with walkers can enjoy this area.)

It is a sloping site, and paths crisscross through the shaded forest.  A few trails might be power-wheel chair accessible.

The restroom is located behind the garage in the basement of the house.  It can be reached from the main road going down the driveway. Several trails end at the side of the house, near the garage from the upper entrance area.

Smith Garden is located at 5055 Raybell Road,  St. Paul, Oregon 97137.
